  • Transport: It is a major transit point on National Highway 744 and the Kollam–Sengottai railway line. 
  • Punalur is widely recognized as the town that ushered in the industrial revolution in Kerala. Its status as a pioneer is primarily due to the establishment of the Punalur Paper Mills, which was the first of its kind in the state. 

     

Punalur Paper Mills: The Industrial Pioneer 

  • Establishment: Founded in 1886 by British industrialist T.J. Cameron, it is one of the oldest paper mills in India.
  • Economic Impact: At its peak, the mill was a massive economic center, providing direct employment to over 1,020 people.
  • Unique Production: The mill initially used reeds from the nearby forests to manufacture paper. It was even a supplier for the India Security Press in Nasik for printing currency.
  • Labor Movement: The mill's workforce formed one of the first organized employee unions in Kerala, playing a significant role in both industrial relations and the freedom struggle. 

     

Other Early Industrial Contributions

  • Infrastructure: To support this growing industrial hub, the Punalur Suspension Bridge was completed in 1877. It was the first motorable bridge in South India, designed to facilitate the movement of goods across the Kallada River.
  • Diverse Industry: Beyond paper, Punalur became a hub for timber trading, plywood, and agriculture-based products like pepper and pineapples.
  • Railway Connectivity: The Kollam–Sengottai railway line was established early on to connect this industrial town with major trading centers in Tamil Nadu
